Do you want to own and run a business? Or do you want to own and run a GREAT business – one that people fall over each other to work at?

Transcript:

Stephen Sendar: The most important quality that they hire for was self awareness.

John Lamy: Seriously?

Stephen Sendar: They consciously hire for self awareness and happiness – two pieces that were essential to them. The technical skills you either have or you don’t, you can learn or you can’t. But without those other two qualities, they weren’t really gonna hire you no matter how much talent you had in it.

John Lamy: And they would explicitly talk about that amongst themselves as they were bringing candidates in?

Stephen Sendar: They explicitly talked about it. They had an interview process with a series of questions created with a psychologist that would reflect those people who had self-awareness and happiness.

John Lamy: Wow!

Stephen Sendar: Steve, are they still doing that same thing?

Steve Rice: To the best of my knowledge they are. They have been challenged a bit by COVID – having to basically hire through zoom meetings. But they’re still looking for that culture, and I think they still maintain it. And in the 30 years of experience I have working with companies, and probably the 30 plus years you have Stephen as well, and our 20 together, cumulative, I don’t think I’ve ever met a company – or worked with a company – that hires people that fit so well into the slots that they need them to. And if they make a mistake, admits it so quickly and deals with it humanely and kindly.
